Educational Development

Through our Educational Development programmatic thrust, the Seattle Alumnae Chapter offers the following educational programs for children and youth:

Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy

The Shabazz Delta Academy is designed to offer a variety of opportunities and experiences to young girls, (ages 11-13). Using science, math, and technology as a focus, the girls participate in activities that are interactive and embedded with Common Core science and math concepts. They also participate in activities that help them focus on healthy minds and healthy bodies, and perform public service organized by the members of Seattle Alumnae. The Shabazz Delta Academy volunteers understand the importance of providing a trusting environment that is non-judgmental and is necessary for these young flowers to bloom.

The Shabazz Delta Academy is open to all girls in our service area which includes King, Snohomish and Kitsap Counties. The girls meet 3rd Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta G.E.M.S.

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Delta GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:

  •  To instill the need to excel academically;

  • To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;

  • To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and

  • To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

The Delta GEMS program offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Delta GEMS participants have the opportunity to define and “Discover their individual Brilliance.”

Bertha Pitts Campbell Scholarship

Bertha Pitts Campbell, one of the 22 young collegiates who founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. January 13, 1913, at Howard University, resided in Seattle from 1923 until her passing in 1990.

As a political and social justice activist, she was a woman who not only left her mark on Seattle and the state of Washington, but the world. Today, the organization she helped to organize, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has over 1,000 chapters around the world and 250,000 members-all implementing programs in our Five Point Programmatic Thrust.

Each year the Bertha Pitts Campbell Scholarship is awarded to Black and African American young ladies matriculating to a four-year university. Applicants must reside and be enrolled in a school located in King, Snohomish or Kitsap County.

Tessie Miller Scholarship

The Tessie Miller Scholarship was created to provide financial support to qualified students taking Advanced Placement classes. High school counselors can nominate deserving students for consideration each semester. Named in honor of the first president of a chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the Pacific Northwest, this scholarship is open to high school students attending schools in King, Kitsap and Snohomish Counties.

Mona H. Bailey STEM Day @ Pacific Science Center

The Mona H. Bailey STEM Day @ Pacific Science Center (PSC) is an immersive STEM program for local third grade students attending partner schools in Seattle. Students and teachers engage in interactive workshops prepared by PSC staff that integrate science, technology, engineering and math concepts and skills. Students have made silly putty or learned concepts in chemistry by making candy crystals. By days end, the students are given an opportunity to play with all of the interactive exhibits at the center.

The Mona H. Bailey STEM Day @ Pacific Science Center is named in honor of Seattle Alumnae Chapter member and the 17th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Mona H. Bailey.
