On September 9, 1979, the Seattle Alumnae Chapter was chartered. This beginning ended a 46 year affiliation with the Alpha Omicron Chapter. Alpha Omicron was chartered on April 17, 1933, becoming the first Black Greek letter organization established in the Pacific Northwest. Alpha Omicron's membership consisted of both collegiate and alumnae members. The chartering of both Alpha Omicron and Seattle Alumnae included Bertha Pitts Campbell, one of the twenty-two founders of the sorority. Virginia Gayton also signed both the charters of Alpha Omicron and Seattle Alumnae.
The Seattle Alumnae chapter is the largest chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the state of Washington, but it is a relatively small chapter within the national organization. For a chapter of its size, it has had several members who have held regional and national offices. In addition being the home chapter of founder Bertha Pitts Campbell, it is also the home chapter of the 17th National President, Mona H. Bailey (1979-1983). It was home chapter to a 2nd National Vice President Barbara Bagneris (1979-1981) and is the home chapter to Doris McEwen Harris, National Secretary (2002-2006).
The Seattle Alumnae Chapter is involved in many community activities. Each year the chapter awards the Bertha Pitts Campbell Scholarship to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue higher education. The chapter contributes both time and financial support to various civic organizations in the greater Seattle community.
